Discussing Occultism in America with High Priestess and Entrepreneur Stephanie Henson

Who is Stephanie Henson?

I am Stephanie a Practitioner of the Magical Arts; Holder of Divine Mystic DNA and Secrets. Not only do I practice as a daily routine of my everyday life, but I also share with the public.

What was your introduction into occultism and what are the first memories you have of your gifts?

My introduction to occultism started at a very young age. I’ve always had special abilities and took fondly to movies that dealt with the supernatural and the occult because they resonated so much to the experiences that I’ve had in life, so seeing those experiences in movies was more real than fiction to me. I remember one of the very first spirits I built a very strong bond with who actually still walks with me was my native spirit. As a child I would sit in the backyard with him though no one else could see him and he would tell me how to do things with the plants in the dirt and how to talk to trees and communicate with nature. He would tell me things about the surrounding land and area as well as about people. All came to be true from research as well as the surrounding neighbors who had been there long enough to know I wasn’t making things up. After discovering I could communicate with beings that were no longer alive or never really alive in the first place (meaning they have never step foot on earth), I discovered I was able to move things with my mind and communicate telepathically. From there I got curious and found myself creating my own spirit boards for communication around the age of 8. That was my start to the world of secrets.

As we’ve spoken about in the past there is a definitive distinction between the illusion of social media occultism and that which is practiced in the sacredness of the science one is initiated into. How do you as someone who is a fully initiated priestess, who also has a successful online brand, merge the two worlds of technology and mysticism?

Merging the world of social media and actual true occultism can be very difficult because there’s so much misconception about what’s real and what isn’t. Spirituality and Occultism has become a trend which can be kind of scary because those who do know some secrets are giving them to people who are unworthy, so I try to educate as best as I can to those who are not initiated to give them an idea of how magic works by experiencing the magic that I provide via social media. Those who are interested in learning the secrets would have to get permission through divination by spirit in order for them to receive those secrets. I take high precautions with those who claim to be interested especially via social media. It is not easy to trust those who I’ve never met in person with such power and secret knowing.

Are there moments in which you lose the balance of keeping those two worlds separated? If so what is it that helps you restore the balance?

There are moments when I’ll become unbalance with the world of social media and occultism because magic is all I know. I have to remember I am still having a human experience and need to at times be able to function as a human without constantly throwing magic into everything that I do with people who do not understand. It can definitely be a struggle.

In knowing you as a Priestess as well as a mother, how do you determine what knowledge you expose your children to and when? Are there certain aspects of magic you practice that you keep away from your children? If so, why or why not?

My children are very intuitive as well as gifted magically. One being a telekinesis guru and medium, the other being a full on witch. I know what to expose to them magically due to spirit allowing me to do so. Due to my children being very open and starting them at a very young age, I teach them the importance of the seriousness that comes with magic. I go by their understanding and maturity level. Though they are still young, they are both learning and understanding very quickly at such young ages. I don’t practice any baneful magic around them due to their spirits still maturing and not ready to be around that type of energy just yet. But I do let them know of the possible dangers and karmic aspects involved with certain types of workings as such.

Being that we are experiencing a surge of more Black Americans curious and interested in learning about African spiritually and the Diaspora, what would be your advice to someone who is open to possibly learning with no experience? Would you be willing to teach them as your student?

My advice to teaching someone the practices with no experience would be to see first if this is even in their path. Magic is not in everyone’s path. Initiated practices is not in everyone’s path just because they are interested or find a liking to what they see on social media. My advice would be to start with honoring their ancestors which are the closest to them. The ancestors come before any Spirit or Deities. I always let beginners know the ancestors will bring you to what they practiced if it be in your spiritual path. If spirit really wants me to teach someone I would do so. But I am very picky because I do not take spirituality or magic as a joke and anyone that I take on needs to understand that they too need to be as serious as myself. This way of life is too dangerous to take lightly.

Do you feel there is still a lot of misconception in way Occultism is viewed by Black Americans in comparison to the Hispanic/Latin Community you are apart of? If so, what are those misconceptions and how do you feel one can overcome those assumptions?

The misconceptions with Black people of America is most are not connected to the roots of true spirituality that started in Africa. The slaves being placed on different Latin Islands to this day hold African traditions very highly. African Spirituality in America has been demonized by those who brought the slaves here so it doesn’t help African Americans break out of it. I’m heavily involved with Hispanic people of African traditions. Those who don’t practice heavy or if at all, are familiar with the African Traditions and Spirituality as opposed to African Americans who I’ve met. Most are lost and have no idea and if they have heard anything it hasn’t been in the brightest of lights which gives a bad look.

Why do you feel occultism is important to Black Americans?

Occultism is important to Black Americans because it was stolen from our ancestors. Those who stole from our ancestors knew our power and it’s time that we get that power back. It’s time that we know the truth and remember who we are through them. They wanted to take that away from us, that’s why they demonize and spent 400 years and more demonizing what our ancestors practice. If African-American people wake up in numbers and practice where we started in the first place we would be a dangerous powerful people. It’s coming soon.

What is something that people may not know about you in reference to your evolution of the understanding you have now in your practice?

Though I’ve always been spiritual since a child people may not know that I was brought up in a Christian household. It confused me for a long time and I thought something was wrong with me because that’s what the church told me. Until I finally broke free without a care of what anyone thinks or says about me. I am grateful and I will continue to be who I am as I was in every life I have been. And that is a natural born Witch.

What lies ahead for you and your brand?

A taste of true occultism has to come for my brand. Moving on from the basics of Hoodoo to the more occult like services such as more ritualistic rites. People really aren’t doing that. I want the people to experience the difference within the magic and how powerful it actually is. How spirits really move and function through actual rights as opposed to just lighting a candle. Results lasting much longer and hitting much more hard. I want them to experience the magic of a true witch as opposed to those who are calling themselves witches and are not even close to that. My brand is to become the evolution and for me to become the face of occultism.
